We felt right at home from the moment we walked in. Sue and Mick are very kind and generous hosts who go out of their way to make their guests feel comfortable and welcome - even down to making the perfect bacon sandwich!
...nice and interesting decor. Situated in an odd place, although handy to town. Quite average views. Weird neighbour who talked very loudly most of the evening. Mattress very hard, very ‘budget’! Fan in Room 4 hummed loudly; couldnt really use it. Parking is definitely NOT sorted!! Hosts were lovely, fairly good breakfast! Very reasonably priced. Old house means alot of creaking boards = you hear eveyone move around the house after hours. Good spa. Nice atmosphere inside. Dont really need the gift shop - sitting area downstairs would be handy instead.
We rang ahead and Toni was waiting for us and showed us around. It is a very stylish older house, done up beautifully with high ceilings and echoes of days gone by. Our room, the Romance was generous with a very good bed, a heat pump and a ceiling fan. The bathroom was equally generous with a very welcome spa bath. The immediate feeling was of comfort and quirky style. Toni showed us the upstairs lounge/kitchen/dining room which has recently been modernised but with the same style shown in the rest of the house. There was a comprehensive range of cereals, teas and coffees and Toni explained that there would have been a cooked breakfast had we been getting up a little later.
As it was, we had an early flight out of Tullamarine the next morning so crept upstairs (to avoid waking the other guests). We would have enjoyed a social breakfast in the very comfortable dining room.
We were there in July when the weather was cold and the heat pump in our room struggled to achieve the temperature we wanted so the spa and warm bed were very welcome.
We ate at the pub in Portarlington where the food was very good and plentiful.
Mick & Susie were very friendly and helpful in recommending things to do, see and eat in the area. Amazing to learn that this beautiful house was transported from Surrey Hills and converted into a B&B by Mick & Susie 18 years ago. The breakfasts were divine and kept us going all day. No children which was a bonus - couples only.
Pelican Sands was a great place to stay, opposite a nature reserve, walk to the beach and Ramblers Walk. Nice views from the back deck, a favourite place to watch the sunset. Susan and Mick were very hospitable.
I come to portarlington each year for the tri and found this place last year. Came back again this year as nick and Susan are such awesome hosts and always make you feel welcome. It's also pretty close to the beach and a short ride to the pier so great if you're doing the tri (or have a boat or want to swim). Rooms are all well laid out with a spa in each. Perhaps starting to get a little aged now but all very clean and functional and in good working order. Definitely going back next year!
