Watch live sheep shearing and see trained dogs expertly round up the flock at the Agrodome, agricultural-themed attractions set on a working farm. Pat lambs and ducklings at the nursery and get up-close to ostriches, llamas and alpacas out in the fields.
Step away from city life and into the friendly, rural atmosphere of a farm show. Learn about 19 different breeds of sheep and look on as one of the animals is given a haircut right in front of you. During the hour-long show, participants are often given the chance to bottle-feed lambs, milk a cow and see dogs herding sheep into an enclosure. Marvel at the skill of the farmers as they use different calls and whistles to guide their sheepdogs around the pens.
Animal lovers will want to venture over to the nursery nearby. Hold and cuddle with baby animals, such as tiny ducklings, lambs and puppies, many of which are just a few weeks old.
Pull yourself away from these cute critters and hop aboard an all-terrain vehicle for a tour of the 141-hectare (350-acre) farm. Trips depart four times daily and take passengers through fields and stunning woodland. Spot deer hiding among the trees as well as ostriches and llamas. An experienced guide will keep you entertained with stories about the animal’s habitats as well as explaining how they survive throughout the year.
Don’t leave the farm without exploring the old woollen mill. Discover how soft sheep wool is turned into exquisite garments and admire a traditional 19th-century carding machine. The mill also houses a small gift shop selling knitted garments along with footwear and rugs.
Agrodome is a 15-minute drive north of Rotorua. There is an individual fee for either the tour or the show or purchase a combination ticket for access to both. Children aged 4 and under enter free.
