Grand colonial mansions line this meandering waterfront avenue in Macau’s oldest Portuguese district, which skirts the shores of Sai Van Lake.

Stretch your legs with a stroll along the scenic Avenida da República. This curving streets presents impressive views of both Sai Van Lake and one of the oldest colonial districts of Macau. Enjoy views of historic homes and some of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Visit Avenida da República at different times of the day to appreciate different perspectives of the skyline.

The avenue is less than a mile long and will only take about 15 minutes to walk from end to end. Take your time by resting on the benches that line the cobblestone pavement. Enjoy views across the lake’s still waters. The 1,109-feet (338-meter) tall Macau Tower rises up on the opposite side of the water and to the east you can spot major Macau resorts such as the distinctive Grand Lisboa hotel. Linger after sunset to observe as thousands of bright lights illuminate the skyline and the bridges to Taipa.

A striking collection of buildings frame the avenue, some pristine and others displaying an element of fading grandeur. At the northern end, the Residence of the Portuguese Consulate occupies the neoclassical building of the once prestigious Bela Vista Hotel. The pink-hued Santa Sancha Palace has welcomed French priests, British business people and Portuguese governors, among other esteemed guests. There’s also some interesting examples of art deco-style houses.

Complete a full loop of Sai Van Lake by following the esplanade that travels around its southern and eastern shoreline. Pause to gaze up at the Macau Tower and watch as the adventurous try bungee jumping from a 764-feet (233-meter) platform. High-speed elevators travel to the tower’s observation deck, where panoramic views of the Macau peninsula, Taipa, Coloane and mainland China await.

Public bus lines provide quick transport between Macau’s hotel district and Avenida da República. Drivers can park for a fee in spaces along the entire length of the street. The street is about 15 minutes on foot from Largo do Senado square via the western shoreline of Nam Van Lake.
