Find a relatively obscure beach in a popular area of sand, warm water and a fascinating variety of coastal life. You’ll be thankful for the uncrowded space.

Visit Bunche Beach near Fort Myers in southwest Florida for a great day on the sand without crowds. Located on San Carlos Bay, the beach has a mangrove forest and salt flats in addition to its white sand. Look for the diversity of sea life as you walk along the shore. Notice that soaring birds have an interest in this area as a food source, particularly at low tide.

The 718-acre (291-hectare) beach has become larger over the years. It started as only 0.25 acres (0.10 hectares) when it was the only area beach open to people of color. In 1949 it was named after Ralph Bunche, who would go on to be the first African American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The largest parcel of land of 700 acres (280 hectares) was added to the beach property in 2002. The 3-mile-long (5-kilometer) beach looks past Sanibel Island toward the Gulf of Mexico. Join an eco-tour to fully appreciate the diversity of the area.

Bird-watching is a popular pastime here, as it is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Look for abundant species throughout the year at this flyway corridor connecting the continent from north to south. Expect to see ospreys, kingfishers and herons among many other water birds and even migrating white pelicans.

Kayak rentals are available. Access the Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail, which explores 190 miles (300 kilometers) of inland and coastal waterways.

If you like fishing, cast a line from either of the two fishing piers or from the shore with a saltwater fishing license. Stroll along a boardwalk to simply relax in the peaceful setting. Because the area is a nature preserve, pets are not permitted. Bring your camera, beach shoes and a picnic if you plan to explore the natural tidal wetlands area.

Find Bunche Beach about 14 miles (23 kilometers) southwest of Fort Myers. Travel here by car in 25 minutes. Parking is available for an hourly fee. The beach is open from dawn to dusk.
