Clock Tower

A courtyard with a stone building, a bell tower, and people sitting at tables.
A cobblestone pathway leading through an archway, surrounded by orange buildings and green trees.
A coastal cityscape with a prominent mosque, a cruise ship, and a historic fort.
An ancient stone archway with a person standing in the foreground.
A stone pathway leading to a restaurant with outdoor seating, surrounded by greenery and historic buildings.

From the top of this Byzantine-style tower you can experience superb views of Rhodes Port and the historic landmarks of Rhodes City’s Old Town.

The Clock Tower is one of the Old Town’s most impressive structures, an ancient Byzantine building that dates back to the end of the 7th century. The tower has not survived the centuries unscathed and was rebuilt following severe damage caused by the earthquake of 1851.

Before venturing inside the tower, look over the exterior with its grand columns, dome and weathervane. A set of stone steps leads to the entrance where you will see life-size sculptures of knights in armour.

Your route to the top of the tower is via a narrow staircase. The stairs are steep so you will need a reasonable level of fitness to climb them. As you make your ascent, pause to look at the views through the small windows. However, the best vistas are to be enjoyed at the end of your climb and include the domes, towers and red-tiled roofs of the Old Town.

See if you can spot important landmarks such as the Suleiman Mosque and the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Look west toward the ruins of the Acropolis of Rhodes or east over Rhodes Port. On an exceptionally clear day, you can see the island of Symi and the hills along Turkey’s southwest coast.

The Clock Tower sits in the centre of the Old Town, a 15-minute walk from the Tourist Harbour. If you are coming to Rhodes City by car, make use of the free parking places on the road that leads to the harbour.

The tower is open daily and there is an admission fee. Included with the price is a complimentary drink at the courtyard café below the tower. It is a good way to round off your visit.
