Downtown Colorado Springs is the artistic and commercial hub of the city. Enjoy its many outdoor and indoor attractions including 180 acres (73 hectares) of parkland, historic architecture, museums, galleries and street art.
The downtown area is home to more than 100 working artists. See some of their works at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Centre and browse artist studios and galleries. Study sculptures that are displayed throughout the downtown area. Every year, the Art on the Streets programme exhibits award-winning pieces.
Get acquainted with the region’s history at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. The attraction is housed in the 1903 El Paso County Courthouse and features exhibits that chart the area’s early years. Visit St. Stephens Church, a late Victorian-Gothic revival structure, founded in 1894. Walk by homes that date back to the late 19th century. At the intersection of Platte and Nevada Avenues, see the large bronze statue of General William Jackson Palmer, the city’s founder.
Relax in a downtown green space. In the centre of the district is Acacia Park, donated by General Palmer. Let your child splash in the popular Uncle Wilber Fountain, and during the winter holiday season, skate on the outdoor ice rink. Walk along the trails of America the Beautiful Park and admire its large rotating water feature. Stroll by Monument Creek at Monument Valley Park, and in the summer, swim in its pool.
In addition to the bars, restaurants, parks and attractions, Downtown Colorado Springs has lots of other ways to keep visitors entertained. There are many street festivals and events throughout the year, including a summer concert series at Acacia Park, art walks on the first Friday of every month and the Pikes Peak Rodeo Parade. The downtown streets are also part of the route of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, held in August.
Downtown Colorado Springs sits in the heart of the city, and is well served by the Mountain Metro Transit bus service. There are also downtown walking trails and bike lanes. Metered parking is available in public and private garages and on many streets.
