Stroll north along Jomtien Beach, past the lines of sun loungers and high class condos and resorts, and you will come to the half-mile stretch of sand known as Dongtan Beach. The atmosphere noticeably calms here the beach is wider with plenty of shade-trees, and the sound of traffic fades into the background, thanks to the ‘pedestrian only’ rule in place on the road directly behind the beach.
Dongtan Beach popular with same-sex male couples, although it is certainly not exclusive and you will see people of all ages and sexes enjoying the soft sands, calm waters, and peaceful atmosphere.
Water-sports enthusiasts are well catered for. For an aerial view of the beach and the surrounding area, book yourself a parasailing session, or harness the power of the afternoon breeze by hiring a windsurfer. If you feel like something a little gentler then try your hand at fishing. Species often caught in the area include barracuda, grouper and trevally. Haul your catch up to a beachside restaurant where it will be expertly cleaned and barbecued in minutes.
If you just fancy a lazy day on the beach then pick your spot and hire a chair or sun lounger from one of the stalls. Note that you may pay more for a chair near the ocean. When you want to cool off, you’ll find safe swimming here, with a large area marked out by brightly colored buoys.
At lunchtime, take a seat at one of the many restaurants and bars and indulge in a spot of people watching as you sip a cool cocktail. The never-ending volleyball games, diverse mix of tourists, and the laid-back locals going about their business will keep you happily entertained for hours.
End the perfect day back on the beach with a relaxing Thai massage. Unlike most other beaches, the masseurs here are all men, but are happy to offer their services to males and females alike.
Dongtan Beach lays between Pattaya South and Jomtien Beach. The nearest place to park is on Jomtien Beach Road.
