When you stay in Gedser, nature really is right at your doorstep! The scenery at Gedser Point and Fiskebaek Forest is in a class of its own, ranking among the best in Denmark - and you can experience it all using bike paths and hiking trails that begin almost right in the town centre.
Gedser is a bustling port town with a marina, fishing fleet and commercial harbour. There's a ferry connection from the port to Rostock in Germany, and never a lack of festivities and joie de vivre in the harbour. When you're in town, don't forget to visit Gedser Church, which was built in 1915. The building is intricately decorated both inside and out, with burnished hardwood furniture and a gorgeous altarpiece.
Take the opportunity to visit the southernmost part of Denmark, Gedser Point, during your weekend stay in Gedser. While the peninsula itself is rugged and windblown, you'll find the loveliest 15 mile-long sandy beach just a little bit farther up the coast. Out on the point itself is an old military barrack, where you can enjoy enlightening exhibits about the area's fascinating geology, wildlife, culture and history. Be sure to check out the atrium, where you'll find the Sydstenen Rock - a one-million-year-old boulder, topping the scales at 4 tonnes, that was deposited in Denmark by glaciers around 15,000 years ago.
And of course don’t miss out on a visit to Gedesby Windmill - a wonderful old restored Dutch windmill from 1911. You can step inside and view the windmill up close. The area around the mill is also used to host a bustling marketplace several times per year, along with many other public events.
Fiskebaek Forest is an enchanting destination all year round, and home to some mystical relics of the past, such as megalithic tombs from the Neolithic era and rows of enigmatic stone cairns whose purpose to this day remains an intriguing mystery.
You can get to Gedser by sea via the ferry from Rostock in Germany or by taking a flight to Kastrup Airport in Copenhagen. From there, it's easiest to just hire a car at the airport and drive to Gedser. The journey is around 95 miles.
Stay in Gedser and enjoy a holiday filled with fantastic experiences amid breathtaking scenery.
