Soothe your aching joints in Budapest’s famous mineral hot springs housed in an impressive building where you can also enjoy a range of spa treatments.

Famed for its art nouveau design, the Gellért Thermal Baths and Swimming Pool has been an important fixture for locals and visitors since it was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. These baths use the thermal springs from Gellért Hill to fill the pools in its majestic rooms. Spend a day taking advantage of the treatment options in this tranquil spa.

Experience the change in temperature as you go from the dry heat of a sauna before dipping into the freezing cold plunge pool. Swim in the open-air pool, which generates waves every half hour. The complex also has an effervescent pool, which bubbles while you swim.

Enjoy a massage to iron out the aches and pains that come with exploring a new city. Take advantage of other services, such as a foot massage, pedicure or a chocolate treatment. Rent your own private bath that comes with a bowl of fruit and a bottle of sparkling wine for some extra indulgence.

Stroll through the building’s various rooms to appreciate the majestic layout. The main hall is known for its impressive glass ceiling and gallery.

Learn the story of the relaxing site, which opened in 1918. The water’s supposed magical properties were used for healing in the Middle Ages. The complex was damaged during World War II and later restored.

Nudity is not required, nor allowed, at the baths since the gendered pools were brought together. Make sure to wear a swimsuit and a swim cap in the pool.

The complex is open daily. Purchase one of the many packages to make the most of the savings they bring, or spend a little more for a package that includes private cabins and baths. Children get discounts and toddlers bathe for free. Towels and swimsuits can be rented from the complex.

The Gellért Thermal Baths and Swimming Pool is on the western bank of the River Danube, just south of the city center and Elisabeth Bridge. Take the metro to Fövám tér or Szent Gellért tér. Plenty of bus stops surround the thermal baths. Among the nearby highlights are Gellért Hill Cave, Liberty Statue and the Citadella.

5/5 - Excellent

You must have flip flops and a swimming cap if you want to go in the main indoor pool take your own towels if you can and a robe would be useful but not essential. (All of these things are available to rent at a price!)

3/5 - Okay

take your own towel, slippers and gown. they charge otherwise and the queue to collect the items and return them was crazy

4/5 - Good

Seriously expensive and confusing system , seems rooted in a system that is jobs for the boys. Signage is poor and the maps are no use either. However the building is lovely and the water looked clean and was warm. We bought a cabin to change in and keep our stuff, but take your own flip flops and a towel as these are needed and are expensive to rent. The towel they give you is small , hard and hardly soaks up any water. Wife was not best pleased at walking about outside without knowing where we were going, so we never found all the spas, but as an experience for 25 euro each it was ok.

take your own swim hat and towel to minimise costs but definitely go.

2/5 - Disappointing

Verified traveller

Very expensive, chaotic, poor signage, laid out like a rabbit warren, crowded, dirty changing area with insufficient changing rooms / showers

3/5 - Okay

Interesting to see these beautiful iconic baths but incredibly crowded and noisy. Though the process appears chaotic the staff are very helpful and patiently direct everyone. Save money by taking your own towel, s-costume, swim hat and flip flops. Certainly not a restful spa experience!
