Hong Kong consists of more than 300 islands that offer plenty of top quality beaches. One of these is Golden Beach, the largest beach in Tuen Mun, in the New Territories region of Hong Kong. This 596-yard (545-metre) strip covers an area of 190 acres (78.5 hectares) with sand that was imported from Hainan Island in China. From Golden Beach, you can enjoy views out across busy shipping lanes and over to Lantau Island.
Dip your feet in the water, go for a swim and lie back in the sand. The good quality water and clean environment make this a popular destination for families. You will find the beach less crowded during the week and in the cooler months.
Facilities at Golden Beach include showers, changing rooms, toilets, a snack kiosk and year-round life-guard services. Shaded benches are dotted along the beach to offer refuge when the sun is at its fiercest.
Running parallel to the beach is a promenade, 525 yards (480 metres) long and bordered by tropical trees and plants. The walkway leads you into Dolphin Square with its statue of three golden dolphins.
Golden Beach is part of the Gold Coast tourist resort, which also includes a marina club and a shopping mall. On weekends and public holidays, the Montmartre art fair is held outside the mall. More than 80 stalls showcase the art and crafts of local artists. Pick up unique ornaments, accessories and paintings, or create your own pieces in one of Montmartre’s workshops.
Hong Kong’s subtropical climate means that Golden Beach is a year-round destination. Summers can be very hot, while milder temperatures prevail from September to January, and the typhoon season runs from May until November.
Located at the 11.5 mile (18.5 kilometre) milestone of Castle Peak Road, Golden Beach is served by numerous bus lines.
