Enjoy a great holiday close to the German border in charming Hengelo. Visit one of the museums or discover the nature of Twente.
Hengelo has an industrial past and is not one of the Netherlands’s prettiest towns. But if you're into technology and love nature, it is a great destination. Visit museums, learn more about the town's history and spend a day in the countryside.
The first factories started settling in Hengelo in the mid-19th century and many more followed. Hengelo quickly grew into a sizable town. The town’s industrial activities made it an important target in the Second World War. A lot of the town was destroyed, leaving few traces of the city's pre-war past. The oldest buildings include the Neo-Gothic Sint Lambertusbasiliek, which dates back to 1890 and the town hall, which was built in the style of Delft School architecture. Climb the tower for a fantastic view of the city and its surroundings.
Museum Hengelo is a great place to learn more about the history of Hengelo from the first settlers to the devastation of WWII. The interactive Twents Techniekmuseum HEIM is a great place to teach the kids about the industrial past of Hengelo and the region of Twente.
Combine your visit to the city with a day outdoors. Twente has a number of nature reserves where you can walk and cycle. The beautiful national park De Sallandse Heuvelrug is a stone's throw away.
Hengelo is a small town, making it easy to explore on foot. Discover the beautiful countryside. Go for a long walk in Lonnekermeer nature reserve just outside Hengelo.
Hengelo is in the east of the Netherlands and easy to reach by train and car. If you're travelling by car and don't want to pay for parking, park at the park and ride (P+R) parking lot just outside the city centre at train station Hengelo Oost.
