Leave the city behind and escape to this artificial lake and recreation center for swimming, cycling and other outdoor activities.

With a large lake, landscaped park spaces and trails for cycling and hiking, the recreational area of Jarun is an appealing retreat. City dwellers looking for a break from their urban environment come here to stroll, sunbathe and take part in water-related activities. Take a daytrip to lounge on its stony beach, try a range of outdoor activities or just people-watch near the lake’s edge.

This site originally held a small channel of water that flowed from the River Sava. After an embankment cut off the flow from the Sava, it became a swampy area. Notice the dramatic change to today’s appearance. In anticipation of the Universiade (World Student Games) which Zagreb hosted in 1987, the artificial lake was created and the recreational center completed.

Stroll around the lake's edge and observe the action on the water. A spectator stand on one end allows onlookers to sit to watch rowing competitions. Other parts of the lake are reserved for swimming. Join plenty of people here during the warm summer months. Watch for a flock of red-billed swans that frequent the area scouting for food.

Enjoy a jog, cycle or roller skate around the paths hugging the lake's edge. Make your way to the east end of the lake and you'll find the stony beach of Malo Jezero. Sunbathe, play volleyball on the sand or rent paddle boats or windsurfing equipment. The beach is lined by numerous cafés and bars, where you can stop for a drink or a meal.

Bring your kids to the playground to try out the slides and swings or challenge others to games of basketball on the courts. Come back after dark to socialize. During the summer months, the bars in and around Jarun are generally lively and busy.

Jarun is located in south Zagreb. Take the tram to Jarun and follow signs pointing toward the lake. Enter the park for free but pay for additional facilities, such as equipment rental.
