Jersey Zoo

Jersey Zoological Park showing a bridge and a pond as well as an individual female

Meet a marvelous menagerie of animals in a historic zoo that has always put conservation and ecology at the forefront of its aims.

Enchanting Jersey Zoo has a long and storied legacy of caring for animals. The family-friendly attraction was created by celebrated nature writer Gerald Durrell as a way to promote conservation. Visit today to encounter a colorful array of creatures and to learn about the best ways to look after these beautiful animals.

Explore a zoo that was first created in 1959 by Durrell, whose conservation trust looks after the park today. It was one of the first zoos in the world to open with ecology as its main theme. Today, it hosts about 1,400 animals from more than 130 endangered species.

Wander through the 32-acre (13-hectare) park to see its animal inhabitants. Friendly orangutans swing around a mountain habitat and ring-tailed lemurs bounce through Madagascan forests. Admire the meticulously recreated environments, designed to make the exotic animals feel at home.

Learn about some of these wonderful creatures at presentations by the zoo keepers. These all-ages talks introduce visitors to the animals, before explaining the challenges facing them in the world today. Many of the talks coincide with feeding times.

Join in one of the interactive animal experiences as part of your trip. Become a keeper for the day or help with feeding the meerkats and flamingos. Some hour-long experiences even allow you to prepare a meal for the zoo’s Andean bears, with help from the keeper on how to care for the creatures.

The zoo offers extras to make your trip more exciting. The Dodo Playground offers fun activities for younger visitors and a café provides refreshing breaks during your day.

Fall asleep to the sounds of the zoo animals in the park’s on-site accommodations. A luxury campsite and a hostel are located within the zoo, with stove-heated tents just moments away from the animal enclosures.

Jersey Zoo is located in the northern parish of Trinity, about 15 minutes away from the capital of St. Helier. Use one of the local buses to get here or drive and use the on-site parking. The zoo is open daily throughout the year.

Not a huge variety of animals here but it does do a lot of excellent conservation work and the talks with the keepers were good too.

Don't not go because it's 'another zoo'. By visiting you are helping the important conservation work they do and it is a great zoo with the animals in as good as enclosures as can be provided in a zoo.

Make sure you take note of the animal feeding times - it's the best way to get a good luck at the gorillas and especially the orang-utans.
