Keawakapu Beach is more serene than its quite touristy neighbours on the southwestern shore of Maui. This beach stretches for about 1,200 yards (1,110 metres), and you should have no problem finding a good spot for sunbathing on the soft, white sand. If you’re looking to escape the crowds or for a spot to let the kids roam free and build sandcastles, Keawakapu Beach is for you. Scuba divers come here to see the fish species attracted to the artificial reef made from old cars.
Take a deep breath and enjoy the palm-tree-lined sands and lapping ocean. Keawakapu’s soft sand is comfortable for sunbathing and early morning workout or yoga sessions.
The water is inviting and has a soft ocean bottom with a gradual drop, so jump in with the kids for a swim or snorkel. In the early morning, when the water is calmer and clearer, you’ll have a better chance of seeing coral, fish and turtles. At low tide, lava rock pools offer a wonderful opportunity to introduce younger children to marine life.
Scuba divers can swim out to explore a man-made reef, located about a half mile (800 metres) offshore. It’s at a depth of 85 feet (26 metres), so you have to be advanced. See the fish that are attracted to the artificial reef made from 150 junk cars, tyres and concrete slabs. It was made in the 1960s to create a breakwater and stimulate coral growth.
For a picnic, purchase groceries from the store at the northern access point and retreat to the lawns behind the beach. There’s also a grill restaurant for sunset dining.
Keawakapu Beach is located in southwest Maui between Wailea and Kihei. Because a large block of upmarket residential homes runs alongside the beach, it is a bit harder to find. This is also what makes it so serene. The beach is equipped with several showers. Conditions can get windy from time to time, and sandstorms are not uncommon. Don’t swim when the swell is high.
