Klitmoller may at first glance seem like a sleepy little fishing village, but make no mistake: It has long since found its way to the big maps, and surf enthusiasts from around the world flock here in droves. That’s because a trip to Klitmoller is also a trip to a surfer’s paradise affectionately known as Cold Hawaii.
The term “Cold Hawaii” covers the coastal strip between Agger and Hanstholm, and here you will find no less than 29 excellent surf spots. The wind conditions – which bear a striking resemblance to those in Hawaii – give the area its name. Of course, the water temperature is much colder, but fortunately there are wetsuits to solve that problem. Even if you’ve never touched a board, a holiday in Klitmoller is still an excellent option thanks to the surf lessons on offer at the city’s surf schools.
It’s not the first time in history that Klitmoller makes it mark in the world despite its small size. Around the 17th century, the city was the most important commercial centre in the whole area due to its lucrative trade with southern Norway. The distance between Norway and Denmark is in fact only 110 km at Klitmoller itself. If you’d like to know more about the area’s fascinating history, pay a visit to the Museum Thy.
Although many people travel to Klitmoller to surf or enjoy the stunning west coast stretch, you certainly don’t need to be a water baby to have a great holiday in this unique and picturesque natural area. Thy National Park, for instance, is just around the corner, boasting a 100km long horse trail, beautiful panoramic bicycle paths and the bird mountain Bulbjerg.
Klitmoller is the ideal family spot for a long holiday or weekend break. Peaceful Limfjord is perfect for swimming trips with children, offering seal spotting and sea safaris, while the paved bathing pool in Northern Vorupor offers a safe and gentle introduction to the temperamental North Sea. Reaching Klitmoller is easy. Take the train to Thisted from here it’s just half an hour’s bus journey to Klitmoller. You can also fly to Aalborg, which is just 100 kilometres by car to Klitmoller.
Spend your holiday in Klitmoller if you enjoy crashing waves and a relaxed, international atmosphere.
