Relax on the sand, take part in watersports and barbecue in front of beautiful ocean views at this attractive seaside location.

Enjoy fun, sun, sand and watersports at Kogel Bay Beach. The seaside destination is part of Kogel Bay Resort, a gorgeous stretch of the coastline flanked by high mountains. Kogel Bay is also known as Koeelbaai, which translates to Cannonball Bay, thought to be a reference to the cannonball-like rocks on the beach.

The 1.3-mile (1.9 kilometer) sandy expanse is divided into three beaches where you can swim, fish and picnic. Try paddle sports and kitesurfing on Klippies Bay Day Camp Beach and Kogel Bay Beach, the main resort. This beach also has areas set aside for barbecues. The other beach is called Sparks Bay Day Camp Beach.

Be aware that if you want to swim in the sea, the area has strong rip currents, and lifeguards are only on duty at Kogel Bay Beach during peak periods. Watch experienced surfers in the waves at the area known as Dappat se Gat.

In addition to your beachside fun, explore the rest of the local environment. Kogel Bay Beach is located along Clarens Drive, a scenic road that hugs the coastline for more than 13 miles (21 kilometers). Go for a drive along this picturesque highway. Stop your car at some of the places along the route that offer great views of the mountains and rocky coastline. During the winter whale-watching season you may be able to spot several species of the large marine mammals, including humpback whales.

Visit the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, a vast protected area known for its shrub-like vegetation, called fynbos, and wildlife. Among the animals you may see in the nature reserve are baboons, snakes, porcupines and Verreaux’s eagles. Go hiking, mountain biking and swimming. During winter, experienced kayakers can tackle the white water of the Palmiet River.

Kogel Bay Beach and the resort area are about 40 miles (70 kilometers) from downtown Cape Town. Expect the drive to take about an hour. Park for free in one of the 200 spots available.
