Kosciuszko National Park

Thredbo which includes a park

Visit this national park in winter or summer to experience the natural splendor of Australia’s tallest peak on hiking and skiing trails, as well as a scenic chairlift.

Kosciuszko National Park is New South Wales’ largest national park, encompassing spectacular ski resorts and pristine mountain rivers. Discover a landscape steeped in Australian folklore when you traverse mountain passes, ride on horseback through alpine meadows and look out over tumbling river rapids. No matter the season, Kosciuszko National Park’s 1,730,000-acre (nearly 700,000-hectare) expanse has something to offer visitors seeking adventure, scenery and relaxation.

One of the national park’s main draws is its collection of ski resorts. Thredbo and Perisher are well-appointed resort villages with some of Australia’s finest ski runs. Carve up the trails to see the captivating snow-dusted ridgeline undulating across the alpine peaks. You can also explore cross-country ski runs and snowshoeing trails in Charlotte Pass, Smiggin Holes and Selwyn Snowfields.

In summer, Kosciuszko National Park is a popular spot for hiking, four-wheel driving, horse-riding and fishing adventures. Take on a stretch of the magnificent 407-mile (655-kilometer) hiking trail that bisects the national park, the matchless Australian Alps Walking Track. A popular trip is the trail to the peak of Mount Kosciuszko. The summit is a short and challenging hike or a quick and breathtaking chairlift ride away. Explore some of the mountain trails with a mountain bike or on a horse. Traverse the Snowy Mountains on horseback to experience the landscape made famous by The Man From Snowy River, a popular Australian ballad and film.

Try canoeing or swimming in the pristine waters of alpine rivers or get a permit and try your luck angling for trout. You can go on a tour through the limestone formations at Yarrangobilly Caves and see some of Australia’s tallest waterfalls at Tin Mine Falls. Camp overnight at one of Kosciuszko National Park pretty campgrounds. Several campsites are located along the park’s hiking trails, as well as a large campground and caravan park at Sawpit Creek.

Kosciuszko National Park is located in New South Wales’ southeastern corner. Cabramurra, the region’s largest town, is a 5.5-hour drive or a 1-hour flight from Sydney. The Skitube Alpine Railway connects the Perisher Valley to the Alpine Way. National park fees are dependent upon the season.

Experience Australia’s alpine splendor in Kosciuszko National Park.
