This clifftop lookout offers some of the best panoramic views of the incredible landscapes of Cañon del Sumidero National Park.

Manos que Imploran Viewpoint (Mirador Manos que Imploran) is one of several observation decks within Cañon del Sumidero National Park. Visit the lookout to enjoy views of a dramatic canyon, the Grijalva River and a hydroelectric plant. Spot varied birdlife, cascading waterfalls and fascinating rock formations.

At the lookout you’ll be high up on a cliff toward the northern tip of the Cañon del Sumidero. From this height, peer down the walls draped by trees and moss to the calm water of the Grijalva River. Watch as boats ferry tourists through the heart of the canyon. See waterfalls emerge from crevices in the cliffs.

The park is a natural habitat for numerous plant and animal species. Bromeliad, ceiba, oak and pine trees, among others, are all visible. Spot birdlife ranging from cormorants, curassows and herons, to eagles and vultures. You might also be able to see crocodiles, deer and spider monkeys.

Look north across a huge reservoir to the Chicoasén Dam and hydroelectric power station. Constructed between 1974 and 1980, the dam controls the water flow of the Grijalva River. It is also a vital source of electrical energy for both the state of Chiapas and Mexico. Prior to the building of the dam, the river was often inaccessible to boats.

Notice the restaurant adjacent to the lookout with more great views from its seating area. Stop here for a drink and snack of home-cooked fresh fish or other seafood.

The lookout is about a 50-minute drive north of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Park for free if you are arriving via car. Tours of the national park depart from Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Chiapa de Corzo.

Combine your time at Manos que Imploran Viewpoint with visits to the other lookouts of Cañon del Sumidero National Park. These include Los Chiapa Lookout, La Coyota Lookout, El Roblar Lookout and El Tepehuaje Lookout. Each offers a different perspective of the canyon, its caves, waterfalls, plants and animals.
