Marmot Basin

Marmot Basin which includes snow, mountains and a river or creek

Escape the crowds and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere at this laid-back resort in the Canadian Rockies.

Set within the unspoiled terrain of Jasper National Park, Marmot Basin offers close to 1,700 acres (7 square kilometres) of crowd-free skiable terrain. Skiers and snowboarders of all levels come here to take advantage of the wide open slopes, lack of lift lines and consistent snowfall. Marmot has the highest base elevation of any major ski area in Canada. Revel in the sense of freedom as you cruise down the spacious runs.

Marmot has 86 runs split almost evenly between novice, intermediate, advanced and expert terrain

on four mountain faces. Sign up for ski school and learn the basics on the gentle beginner slopes. Once you’re comfortable on the snow, ride the state-of-the-art lifts up the mountain to test out more difficult runs. Of particular note is the Canadian Rockies Express this high-speed quad lift is the longest in the Canadian Rockies.

Groups of varying abilities can ride the lifts together to the top, before splitting up and taking different runs down the mountain, each suited to their particular skill level. Novices and intermediates can enjoy long, well-groomed runs while more advanced skiers can find their rush on steep chutes and wide open powder-filled bowls. Marmot also provides several opportunities for glade skiing through tree-lined trails.

As you travel up and down the mountain, admire the magnificent scenery, which is part of a UNESCO-designated site. While the upper reaches of the peaks are carpeted in a blanket of white snow, the lower slopes are covered with forests. Stop for food at any of the three on-mountain lodges two are found at mid-mountain and another is located at the base. Shop for supplies, like goggles or sunscreen, at Outer Limits in the base lodge.

Practice your tricks at one of two terrain parks. If you’re not ready to attempt them yourself, simply sit back and watch others performing jumps and daredevil manoeuvres on the rail slides and table tops.

The ski season at Marmot Basin lasts from mid-November to early May. Lift tickets can be purchased on the mountain or at the Marmot Sales Centre in downtown Jasper. If you’re staying in Jasper, use the daily shuttle service to reach Marmot Basin.
