Consider the immense history and marvel at the preserved tower and scenic churchyard of the oldest religious structure in Reading.

The Minster Church of St. Mary the Virgin is one of the most important and historic sights in Reading. Its central tower has an exceptional checked façade with intricate arched windows and an elegant clock. Enter the nave to enjoy the strange sensation of wandering through a 1,000-year-old building.

Inspect the array of tools and fixtures that have withstood the ravages of time. Among the highlights is the impressive organ, which was initially installed in 1862, before being rebuilt in 1936 and later restored. Listen to the tolls of the bells that were made in the 17th and 18th centuries. Enjoy the serenity and simplicity of the church’s nave, which has tall vaulted ceilings and intriguing tile patterns on the floor.

Attend one of the many events that take place in the church year-round. These tend to consist of organ recitals and classical concerts that make use of the structure’s excellent acoustics.

Appreciate the Gothic features and design of the church, which date back as early as the 7th century. Most of the building that stands today was constructed in the late 11th century on the site of its former incarnations.

Stroll through the tranquil churchyard and have a picnic in the shade of a tree. The highpoint of the vegetation here is the 150-year-old Indian Bean Tree. Examine the 19th-century Jubilee Cross monument that pays tribute to the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, which was the 50th anniversary of her reign.

Note that the site is a working church, with groups and devotions. Attend one of the Masses offered regularly. The church has free entrance but does accept donations.

The Minster Church of St. Mary the Virgin is in the center of the town of Reading. Walk south from the Reading railway station for 10 minutes to get here. You can also ride a bus to one of the stops along the adjacent street. Visit other sights in the area, such as Forbury Gardens, the Oracle mall and The Hexagon theater.
