This beautiful lake is often overlooked by visitors to the area, making it an oasis for those looking for a more serene experience.

The quiet, secluded Moke Lake often goes unseen by visitors to the Queenstown area who are drawn to the much more prominent Lake Wakatipu. However, just 4 miles (6 kilometres) from Queenstown lays the picturesque Moke Lake hamlet, surrounded by mountains. It’s an excellent destination to swim, kayak, horse ride and hike.

Hike the three-hour Moke Lake to Lake Dispute trail, through rolling hills, windswept grass plains and shady Douglas fir forests. The trail is just one of many in the Moke Lake region, but is popular as it returns you almost to Queenstown. For the more adventurous, there are longer, overnight treks that leave from Lake Moke, venturing into the mountains above.

Horse-riding tours are offered by the Ben Lomond Station and are a great way to learn about the area. Join one of the treks, ranging from 1.5-5 hours, as experienced local guides lead you through the stunning landscape and history of the region. The tours are suitable for all ages and no riding experience is necessary.

Brave the chilly, mountain weather and plunge into the lake’s calm water. Lake Moke is a popular swimming spot in summer despite its temperature. Swimmers are advised to bring a wetsuit, or be prepared for a short swim! Glide across the lake on one of the popular kayak tours, which you can with operators in Queenstown.

For those wanting to stay longer than the day, there is a small campsite at the lake. The sites are unpowered but rentals are very affordable.

Lake Moke can be reached by car along an unsealed road, or with the assistance of tour operators. There is no public transport to the lake. Access is available every day of the year. There is no fee to enter and amenities are provided.
