Few experiences can match the joy of riding atop an elephant as it tramps through the jungle or wanders into a lake to cool off. There’s much more, however, to Pattaya’s favourite attraction than just rides. Opened in 1973 as a sanctuary for elephants that were too old or unable to work, The Pattaya Elephant Village is dedicated to providing its inhabitants with a safe comfortable environment, as well as educating the public about their needs and the environmental dangers they face.
For the full Elephant Village experience, join one of the twice-daily tours, where you’ll ride an elephant on a guided trek through the jungle, take a boat trip across a lake, and a return to the park HQ on traditional Thai ox and cart. At the end of the trip you’ll be served a Thai style buffet lunch or dinner.
If you don’t have time to enjoy the full tour you can still experience an elephant ride on one of the shorter jungle treks. Riding with your guide, make your way through the bush to a local silk factory for a demonstration of how silk is made. These tours take just under an hour and include a basket of seasonal fruits.
Don’t miss the chance to feed the elephants at the afternoon show. For a small charge you can purchase bananas that the elephants will take directly from your hand. The show is a fascinating insight into how elephants are trained to work in the forests and how they are bathed and cared for in the sanctuary.
Pattaya Elephant Village is located in the Nong Prue district east of Pattaya city. Many hotels and operators offer tours that will transport you to and from the village. Open daily and there is a small charge for entry, with the shows and tours costing extra.
