Place Royale

An important site in Belgian royal history, this square, surrounded by neoclassical architecture, offers some of the best views of the city.

Place Royale is one of the most notable historical sites in Brussels and is central to discovering the city’s history. For almost seven centuries, Belgium was ruled from the ancient Palace of Coudenberg. It was the home of royalty and occupied a grand position upon the hill that overlooks Brussels. When the palace burned down in 1731, it wasn’t rebuilt the land it stood upon was preserved in recognition of its great significance. Today this area is known as Place Royale and it is overseen by the royal offices. The sweeping open square of Place Royale gives way to a border of 19th-century neoclassical buildings.

Immerse yourself in local history as you walk through the powerful square. Pastel tones adorn the buildings that surround Place Royale, and the neoclassical architecture echoes the squares of Vienna or Venice. Among the buildings is St. Jacques-sur-Coudenberg, an 18h-century church fitted with an ornate bell tower. On the steps of this church in 1831 King Leopold I became the first King of the Belgians. Make the short climb to the top step for stunning views across Brussels. Enter the church to experience its breathtaking decor and to escape the noise of the square outside.

At the center of the square you’ll find a statue of Godfrey of Bouillon, the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. He rides the back of a bucking horse, making his presence felt throughout Place Royale over 900 years after his death.

Limited historical information is provided to visitors to Place Royale in the form of signage however, you can visit the square as part of a historical tour. Sign up at the nearby tourist information center.

The square is located next to Parc Royal, a sprawling park with many food vendors selling local delicacies.

Place Royale is located in central Brussels and is well-served by the metro. Visitors arriving by car will find some street parking in the area for a fee. There is no fee to enter the square.
