Breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the country lifestyle in Singleton. Located on the banks of the Hunter River, Singleton is the largest town in the rural Upper Hunter Valley wine region. It’s an ideal destination if you love food, wine and nature.
Base yourself in one of the hotels or bed and breakfast rooms and explore the area. The township’s creative residents and boutique shops add a cosmopolitan touch to this otherwise traditional rural region.
Follow the signposted Town Walk, a trail past Singleton’s notable historic buildings. Enter St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and stroll past the original Singleton Court House. Pay a visit to the Singleton Historic Society Museum to learn about the Aborigines, British convicts and pioneers who shaped this region. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum honours Australia’s wartime heroes.
The Upper Hunter Valley is home to some of Australia’s oldest vineyards and some of the wineries here are world-famous. With a rented car, you can reach the majority of these wineries in as little as half an hour. Join a wine tour to be able to sample as much wine as you like without having to worry about driving. Many tours offer a gourmet lunch in a vineyard while cellar door tastings often include cheese platters.
There are many options for eating out in the centre of town too. Experience rural hospitality at its best as you enjoy an evening in a country pub, or sampling the local produce at one of the many restaurants.
If, after indulging in so much good food and wine, you feel like burning some energy, rent gear or book a tour for an outdoor workout. Go hiking, fishing, kayaking or cycling in the nearby national parks of Wollemi, Yengo and Mount Royal. A bit further away, to the north, is the sprawling forest of the Barrington Tops National Park.
Singleton is located in the Upper Hunter Valley, about 124 miles (200 kilometres) north of Sydney and 50 miles (80 kilometres) northwest of Newcastle. Buses and trains from the east coast service the area and there is a train station on the outskirts of town.
