St. Peter's Church

Petrikirche showing a city and a bay or harbour

Delight in the panoramic views of Luebeck’s rooftops, attend performing arts events and shop at a Christmas market at this converted church.

Once one of the city’s important religious sites, today Petrikirche (St. Peter’s Church) is a thriving cultural center. Visit St. Peter's Church to travel to the top of its bell tower for unrivalled city views. Enjoy art exhibitions, concerts and theatrical shows set inside an exquisite work of architecture.

A church building has stood on this site since the 12th century and has witnessed many changes. Between the mid-1200s and around the 1400s it went from having a Romanesque to a Gothic design. It then lost its spire, roof and Baroque interior to World War II bomb drops. Reconstruction work finished in 1987, when it was inaugurated as a community center and events venue.

Reach the tower’s 164-feet (50-meter) high observation deck via a combination of staircases and an elevator. The views of the medieval landmarks scattered around Luebeck Old Town are spectacular.Spot notable buildings such as the last-surviving city gates, Burgtor and Holstentor, and some of the Sieben Türme seven church towers. On clear days it’s possible to see out across the Baltic Sea.

The white-washed interior is a dazzling display of high-vaulted ceilings, huge pillars and tall windows. Its picturesque setting and superb acoustics provide an ideal stage for folk singers, jazz musicians and philharmonic orchestras. Browse works by local artists. Talks on philosophy, science and religion also take place.

A great time to visit is in December for the St. Petri Kunsthandwerkermarkt. Artisans from all over the city come to sell their handicrafts, food and drink. Sip on a mug of apple punch and sample homemade baked goods while shopping for souvenirs.

Located in the western area of Luebeck Old Town, the venue is easy to reach on foot from other major city attractions. The Holstentor gateway, Rathaus and Marienkirche are all nearby.

St. Peter's Church is open from Tuesday to Sunday and admission is free. There is a fee to visit the tower and also for select events. Check the official website for more information.
