Technology and Maritime Museum

Technology and Maritime Museum featuring interior views

Learn how to operate a World War II submarine, watch a performance by a mechanical band and discover famous Swedish inventions at this interactive museum.

The Technology and Maritime Museum explores the history of Malmo, from transportation to industry. Climb inside a submarine, learn about pioneering Swedish inventions and listen to a mechanical jazz band. The museum is part of the collection of the Malmo Museum.

Learn about the history of Malmo at the City of All Times exhibition. Discover the evolution of Malmo from an industrial city in the 1850s to the present day. A small cinema shows short movies and documentaries relating to the city’s different eras. Don’t miss the Machine Orchestra, a six-piece mechanical jazz band. It plays live on Saturday afternoons.

Go to the Muscles and Motors exhibition to find historical vehicles, including a horse-drawn tram, a tractor and a steam locomotive engine. The displays document the development from hand and horse-powered machines to engines fuelled by gas and electricity. In the Smart exhibition you can find information about famous Swedish inventions. These include the world’s first implantable pacemaker, invented by Rune Elmqvist in 1958. There’s also an indoor play area for children.

Crawl through a U3 submarine that was used during World War II. War veterans work as guides, explaining how the boat operates and telling stories of life onboard. An audio guide of the submarine is available from the museum’s reception area and includes interviews with former submariners.

The museum is located close to Malmo Castle, within walking distance of the city centre. There is a small onsite car park, which is free. Pay-and-display parking is available in front of the castle.

The Technology and Maritime Museum is open daily, except for some public holidays. Find the complete opening hours in the Museums section of the official Malmo Stad website. Admission to this museum includes entry to the Malmo Museum. It’s free for visitors under 19 years old.
