This waterside arts complex that bears the name of a famous U.K. artist is home to a world of entertainment such as art exhibits, plays and concerts.

Tap into the city’s cultural energy at The Lowry, one of Manchester’s premier hubs for arts and entertainment. View contemporary art exhibitions and watch ballets, plays, operas and concerts all under one roof. There are two theatres, a studio for performing arts and a vast gallery space.

One of the first things you’ll notice about The Lowry is its striking architecture. The stainless steel and glass building rises up from the Manchester Ship Canal and has a boat-like appearance. Inside, the venue is noted for its colourful décor with orange staircases, purple walls and blue floors. Take advantage of The Lowry’s waterfront setting with a walk on the promenade inside the complex. The walkway connects the theatre foyers and gallery spaces and provides views of the water.

The centre is named after the late Laurence Stephen (L.S.) Lowry, an artist famous for his depictions of the industrial northwest of England. View more than 400 of his drawings and paintings in the permanent exhibition that covers all periods of his career. Admission is free. While you are here watch Meet Mr. Lowry, the 20-minute film about the artist’s life that is shown throughout the day. There are also free 10-minute talks about the artist.

Children are also well catered for at The Lowry. Go to The Lookout, an activity centre where they can play, read and create their own artistic masterpieces. There are also family shows performed in the theatres throughout the year. Follow the series of picture clues on the free Art Detectives Trail that helps younger visitors to explore and appreciate the exhibitions.

Situated on Salford Quays, The Lowry is well served by trams, trains and buses. Alternatively, if you are coming by car, the centre is 10-minute drive from the city centre. Parking is available in the Lowry Outlet Mall multistory car park.

The Lowry is open daily, but galleries and theatre performances operate different hours. Check out the centre’s website for the most up-to-date information.
