Vietnam National Museum of History

Museum of Vietnamese History showing a temple or place of worship and heritage architecture

Find stunning Indochinese architecture and a vast collection of ancient artifacts when you view this superb museum collection housed in an architecturally impressive building.

Browse the many exhibits of the Vietnam National Museum of History to view sandstone sculptures from the 7th century as well as tools and household utensils from the Nguyen Dynasty. Explore the tranquil gardens and admire the mix of architectural styles in the building’s fine exterior.

Even against the lush trees and bright tropical flowers of the museum gardens, the striking main façade of the Vietnam National Museum of History will draw your eye. Like many of Ho Chi Minh City’s colonial structures, it was built in the early 20th century and combines a mix of Indochinese and French styles. Gaze up to the tower above the main entrance to see how it is reminiscent of one of the region’s great pagodas. Inside, the walls of the main hall are covered in a white motif that has much in common with colonial French structures.

The displays in the museum are set out in chronological order. Begin your journey through the country’s history by viewing a display of coins, axes and spears from the Dong Son civilization that was prominent around 2,000 B.C.

Continue to find out about the mysterious Funan, Cham and Khmer people who lived across Vietnam and Cambodia between the 1st and 7th centuries. Take a look at an assortment of intricate sandstone and woodcarvings that depict their gods and religious symbols. The highlight of this section is a set of precious relics from the Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia.

A large space in the museum is devoted to the pivotal years of the Nguyen Dynasty between 1802 and 1945. View clothing that was worn by royalty from the last ruling family and see how normal Vietnamese people lived under the command of the emperor and French colonial rule.

Find the Vietnam National Museum of History on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street next to the city zoo and botanic gardens. The museum is open every day except Mondays and there is a small entry charge.
